Overview

In 2006-2007 SAICE-PDP was appointed by the then  dplg  to offer engineering support to some 72  municipalities and to develop capacity. Some 57 professional engineers, paired with more than 100  students needing to complete their P1 and P2 semesters, and 43  graduates were deployed. The idea was that the graduates would carry out much of the routine work supported by the senior engineers, the students would gain the exposure required to finally graduate with national diplomas and the senior engineers would deal with strategic tasks including planning, developing scopes of work, budgets and attending to maintenance challenges. They were also tasked with training in-house technical staff. Considerable successes were achieved in many municipalities. The newsletters below give a sense of the work done, until the programme came to an end when no further funds could be raised
